About the destination: Bhubaneswar, alternatively spelled as Bhubaneshwar or Bhuvanēśvar, is the capital city of the Indian state of Odisha. It's the largest city in Odisha and serves as a hub for economic and cultural activities in Eastern India. Historically, the region, including the old town, was often referred to as Ekamra Khetra, meaning "Temple City". The city is rich in heritage resources, displaying a unique sacred cultural landscape that has evolved over time, supported by the available natural resources and cultural influences. The modern city of Bhubaneswar was officially established in 1948, but the history of the surrounding areas dates back to the 3rd century BCE and even earlier. The city is a melting pot of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain heritage, home to some of the most exquisite Kalingan temples. The city, with its numerous Hindu temples from the 6th to 13th century CE, showcasing the full range of Kalinga architecture, is often referred to as the "Temple City of India". Together with Puri and Konark, Bhubaneswar forms the Swarna Tribhuja, or "Golden Triangle", one of the most popular tourist destinations in eastern India. Bhubaneswar became the capital city, replacing Cuttack, on August 19, 1949, two years after India's independence from Britain. The modern city was designed by German architect Otto Königsberger in 1946. Along with Jamshedpur and Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar was one of the first planned cities in modern India. Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are often referred to as the 'twin cities of Odisha'. The metropolitan area formed by these two cities had a population of 1.7 million in 2011. Bhubaneswar is classified as a Tier-2 city. As an emerging hub for information technology (IT) and education, Bhubaneswar is one of the fastest-developing cities in the country.
