Srinagar India

Surrounded by a circle of lush mountains, Srinagar's main attraction is the enchantingly calm Dal Lake, where a vibrant collection of stationary houseboats create a colorful spectacle and a unique chance for romantic relaxation. The famous Mughal gardens stretch for several kilometers along the lake's less developed eastern shore, contrasting with the intriguingly chaotic old city center that is crowned by a fortress and sprinkled with historic wooden mosques. Add in a mild summer climate, robust Kashmiri cuisine, and the (highly disputed) tomb of Jesus Christ, and you have one of India's top domestic tourist attractions. However, this is not always the case when communal tensions immobilize the city. Unfortunately, this happens quite frequently, raising the possibility that you may find yourself caught in strikes, pro-independence protests, and partial curfews. Although foreign tourists have never been considered targets, it's always a good idea to check the latest situation before your visit.
