Petra Jordan

The legendary "Pink City, in the 6th century, was the capital of the ancient Nabatean kingdom known in the southern Kingdom of Jordan, and due to its fabulous ruins, Petra was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. The kingdom was absorbed by the Roman Empire in the year 106 and the Romans continued to expand the city. After the conquest of the Middle East by Saladin in 1189, Petra was abandoned. The ruins remained hidden to most of the world until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt , disguised as an Arab scholar, infiltrated the city occupied by the Bedouins in 1812. The site was included in the Steven Spielberg film, Indiana Jones and the last crusade in 1989 and was chosen in July 2007 as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
