Yangshuo County China

Yangshuo County is under the jurisdiction of Guilin City in northeastern Guangxi Province, China. Its county seat is Yangshuo Town. Surrounded by dramatic karst peaks and bordered by the Li River, it is easily reached by bus or boat from nearby Guilin. The town became popular with foreign backpackers in the 1980s, and by the late 1990s it was receiving growing numbers of package tourists. While international visitors once made up most of the tourism, by 2005 domestic tourists far outnumbered foreign travelers. Today, Yangshuo is a major resort destination for both Chinese and international visitors. West Street, the town’s most famous street, has a history of more than 1,400 years. It began as a simple lane with just a few grocery shops, but has since developed into a lively area popular with both locals and foreigners. Many signs are written in both Chinese and English, and because of the high volume of international tourists, a notable number of local residents speak some English—unusual for a Chinese town of this size.
